Abstract:
In an age when the sick still went to the barber to have their pulse taken, and the professional physicians tried to maintain a position in the medical market, what did it mean to be a diplomaed, “modern” doctor? Doctor İbrahim Bey (1861–c. 1923) spent his life inside that question. Trained in the laboratories of Germany, he became chief physician of the Hamidiye Etfal, the children’s hospital that Abdülhamid II built and gave his name to, and rose from plain İbrahim Bey to İbrahim Paşa. When the sultan was deposed, he “fell” with him, and İbrahim Paşa was İbrahim Bey once more. And then, pen in hand, he set about creating himself again.
Through his hitherto untranscribed diaries, the hospital’s official yearbooks, related newspaper pieces and the state archives, this talk will present a glimpse into the process of a diplomaed professional’s making himself in the crowded and underpaid medical market of the late-19 th century Ottoman Empire.
