Title: Lifelong Gains from a Strong Start: Early Career Fit and the College Wage Premium (Ismail Baydur, Jie Duan, Paul Jackson)

Abstract: This paper studies the role of career uncertainty in shaping the college wage premium. We document stark differences in the first half of workers’ careers by educational attainment. Non-college workers separate into unemployment and switch careers frequently while exhibiting sluggish wage growth. College graduates separate and switch careers at a lower rate, experience rapid wage growth, and form more accurate expectations about their future occupation. We build a life cycle search model in which workers who are more certain they are well matched to their career invest more in human capital accumulation and see faster wage growth. Equalizing career uncertainty across education groups raises non-college wages by 14.3% and reduces the college wage premium by 17.9%. Non-college workers who fail to find their best career fit early in the baseline economy but do so in the counterfactual enjoy lifelong gains, earning 29% more over their working lives.
