ANAMED invites you to a keynote address and panel series presented as part of the research project Transnational Histories of ‘Corruption’ in Central-South-East Europe (1750–1850).
Constanţa Vintilă in her address Women and the Making of Phanariot Power: Networks, Material Culture, and Influence aims to reconceptualise Phanariot power as a relational and networked phenomenon, in which women were not peripheral actors but essential participants in the production, circulation, and reproduction of influence. By bringing together political, social, gender, and material-culture approaches, it will illuminate the often-overlooked forms of power exercised beyond formal institutions and reveal the central role of women in sustaining the Phanariot world.
Following the keynote, two thematic panel sessions will examine Phanariot networks and imperial statecraft across the Ottoman Empire and the newly emerged Balkan states: Phanariot and Post-Phanariot Networks and Regional Power Reconfigurations (1750s–1900s).
Session I: The Phanariots and Their Legacies: Imperial Entanglements and State Formation
Session II: Phanariot Past and Post-Phanariot Present: Corruption, Political Polemics, and Nation-Building
Together, these sessions explore how network dynamics, imperial entanglements, political polemics, and evolving discourses on corruption shaped governance and nation-building from the mid-18th into the early 20th century.
The keynote speech and the panel are open to public attendance and no registration is required.
