The eighth centenary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi (1226–2026) offers an occasion to reconsider, from a historiographical perspective, the expansion of the Franciscan order and the formation of its foundational cults. The Franciscan Anthony of Padua, who died in 1231 and was canonized the following year, represents a privileged case study for analyzing the mechanisms through which a cult of local origin acquires a circulation of global scale in the modern and contemporary periods, crossing confessional and religious contexts. In this panel, Maria Chiara Giorda presents her research project on the global worship of the saint, based on the assumption that circulation does not merely diffuse a sanctity that is already given, but rather constitutes sanctity itself as a historical object, together with the interreligious boundary that this sanctity itself contributes to producing. From Istanbul to Singapore, from Laç in Albania to New York, the overlap between the Anthonian cult and diverse local religious traditions, Christian and non-Christian, popular and institutional, makes it possible to observe dynamics of translation, appropriation, and redefinition of the boundaries between religious systems, rather than a simple transmission of a single, stable devotional model.
The panel attendance is open to the public and no registration is required.
